COMMISSIONED OFFICERS

Commissioned  officers are those, from full general to second lieutenant, who have been commissioned by the President, acting as Commander in Chief of the Army.

 

GENERAL OF THE ARMY

   

       

 

General of the Army was the highest rank in the United States Army during WWII. It is only used in time of war where the U.S. Commanding Officer must be of equal or higher rank than those commanding armies from other nations. It was equivalent to the foreign rank of Field Marshal.

Some Officer and Enlisted Men earn extra pay. For every 3 years spend in the service ( up to 30 years ), base pay was increased 5%. This was known as "longevity pay".

 

When awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor, the Distinguished Service Cross, the Distinguished Service Medal, the Distinguished Flying Cross or the Soldier's Medal an additional $ 2,00 per month from the date of the act of heroism or extraordinary achievement. Each additional citation awarded in lieu of another medal would have been an additional $ 2,00 per month.  

 

Members in the Air Corps and taking regular and frequent flights, received additional pay amounting to 50% of their total base pay. This was known as "Flight pay".

 

A jumper in a parachute unit not on a flight-pay status received additional pay of $ 50,00 per month.

 

For foreign service, including Alaska, the base pay for Enlisted Men was increased with 20% that of Officers was only 10% of their base pay.
